This is “Dragon Touch MAX10 Plus'' a $155 tablet that looks really impressive on paper. It boasts a quadcore processor, comes with 3GB system RAM, rocks an impressive 1080p IPS display with wide color gamut, and runs a nearly stock version of Android 10. So what's the catch? Keep reading to find out!
What comes in the box?
Let's start with the packaging. This tablet comes in a nice all white box very reminiscent of that fruity company from Cupertino. Opening the box reveals the tablet, a 5W USB type C charger and included cable. I am glad Dragon Touch has included the charger with the box, I can't stand these big companies nickel and diming their customers in the name of saving the planet. When holding the tablet in hands, you immediately realize that this is no cheapo tablet with shoddy build quality. Unlike Amazon Fire HD 10 which is entirely made from plastic, Dragon Touch is sporting a solid metal construction. The chassis and the back of the tablet is made from aluminum which gives this tablet a very premium look and feel. This tablet is designed to be held in landscape mode, and feels most comfortable in this orientation. I like the position of the onboard speakers because they never get accidentally covered with your fingers when holding the tablet in landscape mode. Since you will be watching videos mostly in this orientation, the speakers will always remain unobstructed and deliver the best possible sound.
Build Quality
Webcam
Since we are living in the perceptual world of quarantine and social distancing, let's talk more about the quality of these cameras. You get an 8MP rear facing camera and a 5MP front facing camera. The rear camera can record HD videos capped at 720p resolution while the front facing camera records in 480p resolution. For a typical Skype and zoom conference call, the front-facing camera is adequate although I would have preferred a 720p webcam. The rear camera does come with an led flashlight making it a little more useful for photography. But honestly I don't think anyone in their right mind would be using a tablet for taking pictures. But I do use the rear camera for taking pictures of documents, receipts and checks for archiving purpose
Ports
Let's talk about the ports. While holding Dragon Touch in portrait orientation, the USB Type-C port along with the volume rocker and the power button are conveniently located on the top. There is also a headphone microphone combo jack on top left side if you want to rock old school wired headphones. In addition to the 32 GB onboard storage, you get a micro-SD card slot which is handy for adding extra storage. Next to the microSD slot, there are 2 SIM card slots which initially got me excited. But my excitement was short-lived once I realized that these were dummy slots. For the record, this tablet does not support cellular data connectivity. And that's fine because Dragon Touch never advertised cellular connectivity anywhere in their product listing. My guess is that this company is using the same chassis for various models of their tablet lineup, some of which support wireless connectivity while others are WiFi only. Talking about WiFi, this tablet supports both 2.4 and 5 Ghz WiFi bands. 5 GHz band is usually less congested, so you will get better internet speed when using it on this tablet. Another cool feature in the Dragon Touch tablet is the built in FM radio chip. If you plug-in a wired earbud, this tablet will tune in to various FM radio stations. This feature might come in handy when you are out of wifi range and can't stream music. Just plug-in your oldschool wired headphones, and voila … free FM radio with multiple channels. No Wifi or Spotify needed.
Screen
I love the 10.1” screen on this laptop. It's a full-HD IPS screen rocking 1920 by 1080p. The screen gets really bright matching my more expensive Samsung Galaxy S6 lite tablet. It boasts an impressive 178° wide viewing angle which means pictures and videos won't look washed out when you are looking at the screen at skewed angles. In my opinion this tablet truly shines as a multimedia device. Its 350 nits bright screen can handle any brightly lit room in your house. It also supports 135% sRGB color gamut and offers a wide viewing angle, making texts, pictures and videos look bright and sharp even when viewed at a skewed angle. While most budget tablets skimp on the quality of their screen, Dragon Touch offers a high quality IPS panel screen. Streaming videos from YouTube, netflix, hulu, disney plus, and amazon prime look great. Added bonus is the dual speaker system which is plenty loud for watching videos and movies and listening to music. You also have the option of using headphones since this tablet comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also supports the latest wireless bluetooth 5.0 protocol. Dragon Touch is running a stock version of android 10 which means you will have full access to google play store. Also Dragon Touch fully supports Google Widevine DRM which means you will have no trouble running HBO-max and other premium streaming services like Disney Plus. Added bonus is that this tablet ships with a large 5000mAh battery which delivers around 10 hours of battery life.
Hardware Specs
Let's quickly talk about the hardware specs. So this tablet is powered by an 8-core ARM CPU. There are 4 high performance cores running at 1.6 Ghz and 4 power efficient cores running at 1.2 Ghz. While this is a middle of the road CPU, it's plenty fast for typical tablet usage. I haven't faced any performance issues while surfing websites, watching streaming videos, running productivity apps including emailing and word-processing. Dragon Touch comes with 3GB system RAM which is plenty for effective multi-tasking and quickly switching between various apps. It has 32GB internal storage which can be expanded using the micro-SD card slot. Now, if you are thinking of gaming, the PowerVR Rogue GE8322 GPU is pretty capable of handling casual games like Angry Birds. But this is really not a gaming tablet, so don't expect smooth gaming playback on resource heavy titles like Fortnite. I think Dragon Touch is pitching this tablet to folks who are looking for a device geared towards multimedia consumption and casual social media use. And for these tasks, this tablet hits the ball out of the park
Final Thoughts
So overall for the price, Dragon Touch MAX10 Plus is a pretty good deal. It has a premium metallic build quality, a nice Full-HD IPS screen, 3GB system RAM for smooth multitasking and a full version of stock android 10. Now this tablet will never compete with an iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab, but it's definitely better than most budget android tablets in the market today. So what do you guys think of android tablets?
